Medical Review Officer (MRO)
Medical Review Officers (MROs) are licensed physicians, that must be board-certified, passing an exam administered by a nationally-recognized MRO certification board. An MRO possesses basic knowledge about controlled substance abuse disorders, including legitimate explanations for laboratory-confirmed positives, as well as issues related to adulterated, substituted, and invalid specimens. Their clinical experience is second to none, and they are here to help you.
Medical review officers (or Occupational Health Physicians) are responsible for interpreting drug-testing results for employers and employees. They are equipped with all the skills needed to conduct drug tests, interpreting their results, and making sure that employers have all the knowledge they need. They are also responsible for reviewing the result of each test and interviewing the employee afterward. They will ask the patient if there are any legitimate medical reasons that may affect the outcome of the drug screening, ensuring that employers have the whole story, not just a result.

Mark Costanza, MD, Stuart Dorfman, MD, and Kimberly Oddo, MD work full-time to provide independent, confidential MRO services to their client companies, all while overseeing the accuracy, integrity, and quality assurance of the testing processes performed by Healthworks-WNY. They work together with their staff to ensure the timely flow of test results and other information to employers in a confidential manner, protecting the privacy and confidentiality for all those involved in the testing process. As MRO's, they can also provide Medical Review Officer services for specimens collected at non-Healthworks-WNY facilities, including those located outside of the Buffalo and Western New York region.

Why do you need MRO services?
Answer: When an MRO can determine that a legitimate medical explanation exists for a "positive" drug screen, the MRO will overturn the original result reported by the lab and instead report the final result to the donor's employer as "negative". While a small percentage of companies will choose not to pay the extra expense associated with MRO services, such services greatly enhance the validity and reliability of the overall drug testing process. They also help ensure fairness for the donor, and they offer more protection to the employer should litigation ensue if the employee claims wrongful suspension or termination.as a result of a "positive" drug screen test.
